My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have mixed feelings about this book, while I liked it there were parts that I didn't enjoy which surprised me because I have rated two of Julia Bramer's other books with five stars.

Lets start with what I did like:
The story line was great, Cockaigne a land of plenty in medieval myth, an imaginary place of extreme luxury and ease where physical comforts and pleasures are always immediately at hand and where the harshness of medieval peasant life does not exist has been brought to life by Duke. There is so much that can be said about Duke but that will give away to much of the plot, so all I will say is that he was my least favorite character...for obvious reasons but you'll have to read the book to see what they are.
Marley Williams is just months away from getting her medical license in psychiatry, she is a strong female character that has overcome many obstacles in her life. But when she finds out about Cockaigne from one of her patients (Sara) she does something that no psychiatrist should ever do, she follows the bread crumbs because she thought Sara was making everything up, and finds herself in the real as day private sex club that Sara spoke about....(uninvited I might add) .
Max West is the sexy as sin District Attorney content in his life although he does not feel fulfilled, when he meets Marley things start to change for him.....in a good way.

What I didn't like about the book:
It started off HOT! Like off the charts melt your kindle HOT and then we are in the hospital wondering what the heck happened because there was nothing to prepare us for the switch, from that point on we get flashbacks of everything that happened to Marley after her one visit to Cockaigne. I wish I could say that it continued to sizzle but it didn't, we are pulled into a dark, twisted, and convoluted story so much so that I actually had to put the book down for a day to regroup before continuing. That being said, as the story unfolded I held out hope that Marley would get her HEA with the sexy Max West even when it didn't look good at times.

Some may say that there was a love-triangle going on in this story but I wouldn't describe it like that at all, I would say that there is more than meets the eye with them, and love didn't come into play at all with a couple of the key players. If you enjoy a dark romantic story I would give this book a read.
